If (in what I feel is probably a VERY UNLIKELY CIRCUMSTANCE) Philip Pullman expressed irritation at people referring to other beings/whatever as their “Daemons”
I would probably stop
because it would be polite.
But in this case it is a word in a fantasy book by a white dude. A word (as another person pointed out) derived from Ancient Greek culture, which is, again, a culture that in our time and in the western world is accorded a certain amount of hegemonic privilege/respect.
It has nowhere near the same real-world weight as the appropriation “spirit animal”, a term with a great deal of significance to many Indigenous groups. Groups which certainly do not occupy a privileged place on the hierarchy.
And comparing the two is kind of shitty and disingenuous! And the fact that people leap to do so so rapidly is really kind of disconcerting and upsetting to me.
